Racing
While I have written for many different publications on a variety of subjects, one consistent flow of work has come from American Turf Monthly , one of the oldest thoroughbred racing magazines in the country. This work has allowed me to acquire in-depth knowledge regarding the art of handicapping and good contacts within the industry. My love of racing did not start at an early age. In fact, many times as a child, I didn't understand why a big race telecast sometimes pre-empted the broadcast of an event I may have found more important - such as a Laker game. But, in the late 1990s, a friend took me to Hollywood Park and I was soon hooked on the spectacle of racing. Naturally, when I decided to rekindle my childhood love of writing in 2000, it made sense that I focus on things I knew, and horse racing was a subject I had delved into with a passion. Admittedly, my first assignment with ATM was a little rocky. I had an idea about digging into the role of the jockey in the process of handicapping thoroughbreds (an angle I still wish to pursue) - mainly because most of the literature on racing basically glossed over the riders' role in the outcome of races - but found my sources tight-lipped and this particular niche of the world quite insular. However, through the experience of future assignments, I began to develop a level of expertise on the subject and grew as a writer and journalist through the process. At this point, I would like to take a moment to thank Jim Corbett, editor-in-chief at ATM, for giving me my first major break as a freelancer. check out a replay of one of my favorite horses winning a prestigous stakes race at Del Mar here. You'll need Real Player to view this file and it will take anywhere from a minute or two to several minutes depending on your internet connection. However, if you get the pleasure of checking it out, you'll see why Blackdoun won the horse of the meet that year at Del Mar and was simply a joy to watch. He is now standing as a Stud at a wonderful hara in France.
